AS Media Textual Analysis/Survey Report

AS Media Textual Analysis/Survey Report

The research I have undertaken has had a big impact on what I am making for my pre-production, what I am basing it on, the audience and the price.  My research consisted of many textual analysis reports and a survey asking people about their opinions on music and CD covers.

From the survey I sent out, 80% of responses were aged 15-18 and 20% were aged 35+. This means that more teenagers buy or download CD’s and this is why I decided to aim my CD’s at teenager’s aged 15-18. I also found out that 60% of the responses were female and 40% were male, as there was only a 20% difference, I decided to not aim my CD’s at one gender in particular, this also opens up the target audience and allows me to include more on the CD covers instead of having to try and aim it at one particular gender. From my survey I found out that most people either prefer pop music or rock music, this gave me the idea to make my CD the genre ‘punk rock’ as this is both of these types of music put together. This also keeps everyone happy and once again makes the target audience bigger, which will also sell more as there is a higher demand. On my survey I asked how much people usually pay on CD’s and 20% said £5-£6, 20% said £7-£8, 40% said £9-£10 and the other 20% said £10 or over. When I first thought about this, I was going to charge £9.50 for my CD as that is what I gathered from my survey, however, as it is aimed at teenagers I am actually going to charge £7 for my CD. This is because usually teenagers aren’t earning a lot of money to spend on things they want instead of need, which is why I am going to sell it for cheaper as it will become attractive to them and will stand out more. I also asked people what attracts them to a CD and all of the responses were talking about the look of the album cover or the main image. This is why I have chosen to focus on my front and back cover images, so that many people are attracted to it at first glance, even people out of the target group. My final question was about if they preferred solo artists and bands and 100% of the responses were bands, which is why I am making my CD about a band because from other research I found out that teenagers these days listen more so to bands than they do to solo artists, this way I am meeting the needs of the target audience.
